The Beginning

Since 2007 Nottingham Cellars has been making Cabernet and Bordeaux Style Red blends in the Livermore Valley.  Our flagship blend, Supremacy, has always represented our best foot forward in our effort to produce world-class wine.  The name was chosen to make a bold statement about the quality of the wine, not an indication of our character. However, we have come to realize that the name Supremacy is insensitive to our friends and family in the African-American community.

Our organization values the camaraderie that we share amongst our community. Regardless of race, religion, creed, or sexual orientation Nottingham Cellars stands for equal opportunities for all and values the character of a person first and foremost. Looking into the future we are eager to take an active stance on ending systemic oppression. The Cranor family and Team NC are committed to working together to #endSupremacy.

In 2017 we were introduced to Thomas W. Dortch Chairman of the 100 Black Men of America, Inc headquartered in Atlanta, GA. In 2017 California was experiencing statewide wildfires, and while on a visit to the Napa Valley. Mr. Dortch and his team were evacuated and decided to spend the remainder of their planned time here in the Livermore Valley. We were fortunate enough to have them join us in our tasting room for the weekend and a relationship was born. Over the next couple of years, they made a point to stay in the Livermore Valley when visiting and that is when we learned more about their organization and it's goals.

Why the 100 BMOA?

After learning more about the organization we were very inspired by the work the 100 were doing nationally. The 100 has a very impactful, effective and downright impressive track record of creating opportunities for those they serve, Tommy's love for wine made the relationship even sweeter

The 100 seeks to serve as a beacon of leadership by utilizing our diverse talents to create environments where our children are motivated to achieve and to empower our people to become self-sufficient shareholders in the economic and social fabric of the communities we serve.

The mission of the 100 Black Men of America, Inc. is to improve the quality of life within our communities and enhance educational and economic opportunities for all African Americans.

100 Black Men of America, Inc. is committed to the intellectual development of youth and the economic empowerment of the African American community based on the following precepts: respect for family, spirituality, justice, and integrity

Collin and Jeff took a trip to Atlanta to explore opportunities on how we could work together.  After some planning, we launched 'Significant', a hand-crafted Rhône blend that would represent the 100 as their own company-wide red wine offering. All proceeds made from the wine are used by the organization to further create career, social, and economic advancement opportunities for the members of the 100.

Our Pledge

The 2016 vintage marks the final release of our former flagship 'Supremacy'. Director of Winemaking Operations Craig Ploof was still new to our team having just moved over from Steven Kent Winery. Alongside SK and the Lineage Collection for over ten years he had an immediate impact on this vintage. Collin and Craig were able to make magic happen and the wine garnered the highest score the wine has ever received. Wine Enthusiast rated the '16 vintage 94pts. While it can feel bittersweet, we get great joy in this pivot. We feel it represents an important shift in our philosophy and we are eager to see the growth it brings.

Our goal is to use the remaining inventory to raise money for the 100 BMOA. Supporting their efforts in providing business opportunities through networking, mentorship, and scholarship opportunities to its youth.  We have been working with this organization for a few years and are excited to ramp up our efforts in support.

Our pledge is to donate 15% of all sales of the remaining Supremacy. The money raised will be used to support hospitality-related programs here locally within the 100 Oakland chapter. The hospitality industry would not exist without its diversity and we hope to build a bridge between the Food & Beverage industry and this organization. We have an initial goal to raise $30K and the money will be used for tangible tools for members of the 100BMOA local chapter.

Beyond Supremacy

Our pledge to #endsupremacy does not end when the final bottle is sold.  We are working on a new product to replace our former flagship and will continue to donate 15% of all sales to 100 BMOA.  In addition, we are looking to provide job opportunities in hospitality and winemaking through the local chapters.  We will share more as this new program develops.

What can this money do?

There is still work to be done in building out these programs but below gives you an idea of what this money can do. Listed below are certifications that are highly regarded in the Food & Beverage industry. Hospitality professionals are far more likely to succeed within this industry having a few of these certifications on their side.

These numbers change yearly but they give you a great idea of the money required to partake in career advancement opportunities:

WSET Level 1 starts at $400

CMS Level 1 $1000

Wine Scholar Guild $1000

CMS Intensive Certified Program - $10000

Enrichment Trip $2500 (not including transport & board)

SWE Certification $800

Cicerone Level 1 $500

Why Now?

2020 has been quite the year for reflection and personal growth. In light of all that is happening here in the country, we feel compelled to do more for what we believe in. It is simply not enough any longer to stand on the sidelines in support of a equality. It is time for all of us to attack these issues with urgency. Working together to fight for social, economic, and judicial equality for our brothers and sisters regardless of race, religion, creed, or sexual orientation. Focusing on the development of the youth and guiding them towards opportunities in entrepreneurship is something we can get behind and support wholeheartedly.

The real question should be, if not now, when?
